Tips for Photo Session

Location:
Where would you like your photos to be taken? Is the background of the photos important to you? Do you want them to have a certain feel (ie. a professional look in front of a bookcase)? Do you prefer to be outdoors? Think of places you would like as a suitable background in your photos. Here are some suggestions:

  • At a park
  • Inside your home
  • Your back yard
  • A really cool place in the city
  • Where you first met your partner
  • At your office

Clothing and Props:
You should wear solid-coloured clothing in bold or neutral shades (whatever flatters you). Patterns and logos are very distracting in photos and can really date the photograph. You want the focus to be on the people in the photograph, not on their clothing! Do consider bringing along a change of clothes if you’d like to.

Dress as casually or as formally as you’d like, but if there are more than one person in the picture, make sure you are dressed at the same level of formality.

You can bring something along that means something important to you, such as a piece of jewellery, a book, a special flower, or your pet. If you do bring a pet, please bring someone with you who can look after the animal during any shots we do without the pet in them.

Posing:
If there are poses or ideas that you’d like to try, please let us know ahead of time. If you have a sample picture, that would help. Please note, though, that your shoot is YOURS ALONE, and not every pose will work, so we will stick with those that flatter and express you, not to a pre-determined list.

Remember to relax. Keep your shoulders relaxed, your hands relaxed, your face relaxed. Smile with your eyes.

Makeup:
If you regularly wear makeup, do your makeup as you usually would. You want to look like yourself in your photos, but everyone, even men, can stand to use a little concealer on blemishes, or powder to reduce shiny skin.  But don’t stress over blemishes. Most can be reduced or removed, if you desire, for the final images.

It’s a great idea to have a makeup artist do your makeup before the session, but please let them know what it’s for, and indicate whether the photos will be mainly in natural or indoor lighting to help them decide on the best makeup for you.

Whether you decide not to wear any makeup, do your own, or hire a professional, it’s a good idea to bring some powder and a hand mirror as well as your lipstick or lip gloss for touch-ups during the session.

Most Important Tip:
Be yourself and have fun! This will help create the most natural, and beautiful photographs!
